Kittywood is a project of Yuka Hayashi and Rob Oudendijk
It started a long time ago with the understanding we as a human society need to build houses that last a long time and protect us for forces in nature that can harm us. Like flooding, earthquakes, etc. It is a work in progress.
The idea is to build a dwelling that last a very long time and does not rot. I should be able to float in case of flooding and in case of an earthquake it should just slide. The setup should be in independent off power, water, and sewage systems. All objectives are met with the current design, but a lot of “tweaking” still needs to be done.
Electrical power is supplied by a small hydro (260 watt running 24 hours), water is directly from a small river and filtered and tested well. Isolation of the house is 10 cm XPS. No internal wood of steel is use for the structural support. Sewage is done by a saw dust system for collecting human waste and that is stored for 3 years to be degraded to soil and use on the land for providing plant with nutrients.
